Lukáš Trantírek, head of the Non-Coding Genome research group at CEITEC Masaryk University, has been awarded the prestigious Petr Sedmera Award by the Jan Marek Marci Spectroscopic Society for his research in the field of DNA structures known as i-motifs. The annual award for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance reflects the significant contribution of Dr. Trantírek and his team. Together, they have developed a method that allows the observation of cellular processes directly in cells at different stages of their life. The applications of this approach have the potential to bring new insights into structural biology and medicine and provide crucial information important for drug development. The importance of the research results is underlined by the publication of the work in the prestigious journal Nature Communications.
I-motifs, specific DNA structures, play an important role in the regulation of gene expression, which is crucial for the proper functioning of cells and the organism as a whole. Using a newly developed method, Lukáš Trantírek and his team have described a new mechanism for regulating the formation of i-motifs during the cell cycle. I-motifs are considered as potential targets for the development of new therapeutic strategies, for example in the treatment of cancer. The research results will thus help to better understand the biological mechanisms of i-motifs and improve treatment options for genetically based diseases.
