Hyaluronan is a major component of the extracellular matrix that plays a crucial role in organizing tissue architecture and regulating cellular functions such as cell proliferation and migration. The concentration, size, and turnover rate of hyaluronan in organism are tightly controlled. Despite its relatively simple chemical composition, hyaluronan’s wide range of molecular weights and specific interactions with hyaluronan biding molecules mediate various biological functions. Currently, a close connection between altered hyaluronan metabolism and physiological and pathological events such as wound healing, inflammation, and cancer development is suggested. Current advances in knowledge of hyaluronan biosynthesis, catabolism, and selected hyaluronan regulatory functions will be presented.
