A month after the Olympic Games in France, medals were also awarded at CEITEC Masaryk University (MUNI). Martina Pokorná and Michal Marcolla received them for their long and rewarding tenure at the university and for their contribution to the development of science.

Martina Pokorná

Martina Pokorná received the bronze medal of Masaryk University from the hands of CEITEC MUNI Director Pavel Plevka for her outstanding contributions in the field of science, research and strategic management of human resources at CEITEC MUNI. The award of the Masaryk University Bronze Medal is a significant and prestigious award that highlights Martina Pokorná's role in the management and development of human resources within the institution.

In addition, Martina Pokorná was awarded the Masaryk University Faculty of Science 2024 Award in the category of graduate in natural sciences. This recognition reflects her long-term contribution to the development of natural sciences and activities with a society-wide impact.

Martina Pokorná is a graduate of biochemistry and biomolecular chemistry at the Faculty of Science of Masaryk University, where she also received her PhD. During her research career, she has led major projects, completed international internships and focused on lectin research in a bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This research is of key importance for cystic fibrosis patients. Since 2012, she has been the Deputy Director at CEITEC MUNI, where her work has contributed to the efficient functioning and administrative support of the scientific teams. From October 2024, she will keep an eye on human resources agenda at CEITEC MUNI.

Michal Marcolla

Michal Marcolla, who has been a part of CEITEC since 1 November 2008 – from time when it was still a project – and serves as the Secretary of the institute, was awarded the Small Bronze Medal of Masaryk University, which he received from the Director of CEITEC MUNI in recognition of his long and distinguished service. Michal Marcolla has demonstrated exceptional skills in managing the internal administration and management of the institute. His main tasks included not only ensuring the conception and management of the budget, but also the planning and utilization of all types of financial resources. At the same time, he coordinated operational matters, including cooperation with the Management of the University Campus at Bohunice, and provided methodological leadership to the economic department, the project administration department and the operations department.

His professional approach was key to the stable and efficient functioning of the institute. Thanks to his diligence and organisational skills, the smooth running of the institute was ensured, which was significantly reflected in its daily operations. After fourteen years of distinguished service, he is leaving at the end of October, and fully deserves this prestigious award in recognition of his contributions and dedication.
