Join us for January's session of the Life after PhD event! This time we welcome Rastislav Horos, DVM, PhD from Hummingbird Diagnostics GmbH.
Rastislav received his Master’s Degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Kosice (Slovakia). After his Master, he started his PhD at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam (Netherlands) from 2006 until 2011. His research focus of his PhD was the mRNA translation regulation in Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA) – a rare disease.
After completing his PhD in 2011, he continued as a Post-doc Researcher at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg, Germany) with a focus on the topic of Identified conserved RNA-binding proteome; pinpointed to the RNA binding as underlying mechanisms of a human mitochondrial disorder.
In 2015 he became a Staff Scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. The main topics of his research were Biological significance of RNA binding for selective autophagy receptor p62. Coined a novel regulatory mode of RNA targeting protein oligomerization; top-tier journal publication; a patent on the usage of p62 RNA regulation in a disease context.
In 2020 he moved to Hummingbird Diagnostics GmbH in Heidelberg (Germany), where he started working as a Laboratory Head and Assay Developer. In 2022, he switched to a different position and started working as Vice President of Technology and since 2022, he has been working in the same institution as Chief Technology Officer.
Rastislav's interests include literature (sci-fi, fantasy and non-fiction, etc.), astronomy, board games, sports (running, cycling and hiking).
