About event
What can the lives of pioneering women scientists teach us about careers, courage, and making an impact?
In this edition of Life after PhD, we are excited to welcome Dr. Sònia Garcia, a plant evolutionary biologist from the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (CSIC), an author, and a passionate science communicator. Through her research, outreach, and writing—including a recent book commissioned by the Catalan Government—she has brought attention to outstanding yet often overlooked women in science.
In her talk, Dr. Garcia will share the stories and scientific legacies of women who made groundbreaking contributions to crop research and plant genetics—from Barbara McClintock to Janaki Ammal and from Mary Agnes Chase to Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier. Alongside their discoveries, she will explore the challenges these scientists faced and how gender biases have shaped the history of science.
Together, we’ll explore the question: Why are women still underrepresented in scientific leadership—and how can we help change that?
Join us for an inspiring and thought-provoking session that celebrates science, diversity, and determination.
