Excellent opportunity for foreign science journalists to dive into the world of science
Masaryk University Science Journalism Fellowship supports one month-long stay of a foreign science journalist at Masaryk University in the Czech Republic. The purpose of this fellowship is to improve mutual understanding between researchers and the science journalism community while respecting journalistic independence. The fellowship will focus on excellent research carried out at Masaryk University, including projects funded by the European Research Council. It is designed for journalists dedicated to informing about science and research and communicating scientific results. Experienced science journalists are encouraged to apply!
About the hosting institution
Masaryk University (MU) is the second largest university in the Czech Republic, founded in 1919 in Brno, Czech Republic. MU consists of ten faculties and offers 400 study programs for more than 30 000 students. Science and research at MU are concentrated at the University Campus Bohunice (UCB). The campus is the largest construction project in the field of higher education in Central Europe. This modern centre of education and research spreads over 42 hectares and hosts the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Sports and the Central European Institute of Technology – also known as CEITEC.
CEITEC MU is Czech Republic’s flagship basic research institute. Its modern in-house core facilities provide open access to the latest technologies and expertise. CEITEC MU employs more than 500 researchers from over 35 countries who are together pushing the boundaries of knowledge in four life science areas: structural biology, molecular medicine, genomics and proteomics of plant systems, and brain and mind research.
Masaryk University and CEITEC are located in Brno - the Czech capital of science and technology. The lively city offers a great culinary and cultural experience and is surrounded by beautiful nature, parks, forests and nearby lakes. The city is located in the heart of Europe, where Johann Gregor Mendel laid down the foundation of modern genetics and where one-third of the world’s electron microscopes are produced!
Qualifications
We are seeking a creative and driven journalist with science communication experience interested in learning more about science and research at Masaryk University in the Brno region and the Czech Republic. The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications:
- University degree in Science Communication, Journalism, Health, Science or a related field
- Minimum 3+ years of professional science writing experience
- Ability to understand complex scientific information, theories and practices
- Ability to write in a clear, concise and accurate language that can be understood by the general public
- Practical experience with a variety of communication tools
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Strong interest in science

Salary: This fellowship offers a financial compensation of 230 EUR per day and covers travel costs up to 500 EUR.

Expected start date: 1.10.2022
Hours: full time
Duration: fixed term, one month (up to 33 calendar days)
Eligibility criteria: only candidates from outside the Czech Republic will be considered
