The young neuroscientist, who researches Parkinson's disease, succeeded in a competition of nine finalists from all over the Czech Republic.
Brain, jungle and pathways between neurons, that's what Luboš Brabenec, who works as a researcher at CEITEC Masaryk University, where he researches Parkinson's disease and how to relieve patients from the symptoms of the disease using brain stimulation in the home environment, called his three-minute stand-up.
To popularise his research, he has chosen, among other things, the international FameLab competition, which has been held under the auspices of the British Embassy in the Czech Republic since 2011. Nine scientists made it to this year's finals, which took place on Tuesday 17 September at the Prague Castle Ballroom, and they had three minutes to explain their research topic to the people in the audience, without a presentation and only with the aids they were able to bring on stage themselves.
Luboš Brabenec's performance, which focused on the functioning of the human brain, was the most successful with the expert jury, which included historian Jiří Martínek, surgeon Barbora East and chemist Michael Londesborough. The young neuroscientist is the winner of the Czech finals and will perform his stand-up in the international finals of the FameLab competition in November.
"Winning FameLab was a big surprise for me. All the contestants were great and I really didn't expect it. The moment I found out, I felt very happy, but I also started to feel the weight of the responsibility that awaits me in the international finals," commented the young neuroscientist on his success in the competition.
And what did Brabenec present in his performance? He tried to find answers to how our brains are constantly changing, how important the connections between neurons are and whether these changes and the learning process could be supported by brain stimulation.
But popularising his research is not just about this competition. For example, he posts tips on interesting books or scientific studies on his Instagram account called Ants in the Head. And those interested will have the opportunity to listen to his live lecture at the upcoming Night of Scientists, which takes place on 27 September. The recent winner of the Czech FameLab competition will give a lecture on the topic of the Fantastic Brain and How to Change It at 9 pm on the Bohunice campus.
