15. May 2019

After two years of internal discussions, and based on consultations with the Scientific Board of the Institute, the new CEITEC MU Career System was adopted, and has been effective as of 1st April 2019. The Career System formalises and specifies the principles that are internationally applied at life science institutes. It prevents the inheritance of research groups, and incorporates measures against inbreeding. The norm regulates the principles and prerequisites of career advancements, career development, and career changes for employees working at CEITEC MU.

We would like to invite you to the internal seminar "Implementation of Career System at CEITEC MU" to find out what the new Career System brings for you. Come to discuss it on Tuesday, June 25, 2019!

What Does the Career System Bring?

Group Leaders Track:

Research group will further be inextricable from the person of group leader, who is to be selected only through an open call – in other words, “when the group leader leaves, the group is terminated.”

Two career stages for group leaders are defined: junior and senior.

All newly appointed research group leaders who have not previously held such a position elsewhere will be junior research group leaders. They will be subject to regular evaluation, at the end of their fourth year at CEITEC, which may recommend tenure (granting an employment contract to the group leader for an indefinite period of time), termination (to be implemented within one year), or probation (another evaluation within a year, subject to specific conditions).

Senior research group leaders will be subject to the Common Evaluation of Scientific Excellence of the CEITEC consortium, which may lead to termination of the group if it fails to meet the Common Criteria of Scientific Excellence.

In cases of financial exigency threatening the institution´s existence, a special (ad hoc) evaluation may be used to select the research groups to be terminated. It should use a ranking approach, and take into account the results of the latest CEITEC Common Evaluation of Scientific Excellence.

Other Research Staff:

Other research staff will generally be employed for a definite period as “PhD candidates” or “postdoctoral researchers” with the exception of “staff scientists” (junior, senior, or clinicians) who may be contracted for an indefinite period of time.

PhD holders from Masaryk University who graduated in past 3 years will not be eligible for selection as postdoctoral researchers.

The position of a postdoctoral researcher cannot be filled by a person who worked at the Institute in the period of 2 years immediately preceding the tender as a PhD student or who, during the same period, completed a doctoral study program at MU, having the (main) supervisor at CEITEC MU in the same time. – this rule is applicable from 1st September 2019.

Other Provisions:

The Career System will enhance both assessment (of performance) and mentoring (for personal development) of all scientific personnel.

Scientific personnel have the right to a facilitated transition to technical and/or administrative positions, should they so desire, subject to availability of positions (and approval of the respective line manager).

The norm regulates the principles and prerequisites of career advancements, career development, and career changes for employees working at CEITEC MU. – see Career Scheme below
