AI-Assisted Molecular Biological Data Analysis in R

About event

In the fast-paced world of molecular biology, understanding your data is critical, but learning to code can often be a challenging and time-consuming barrier. This workshop offers an innovative solution: harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to streamline your data analysis workflow in R without needing to master coding syntax. We’ll show you how AI tools like GitHub Copilot can help you analyze complex datasets, such as RNA-seq expressions, with ease. Whether you’re just starting with data analysis or looking for ways to improve your efficiency, this workshop will empower you to make the most of AI in your research.

Day 1 – 12 November

13:00–14:30
  • Introduction to R and AI tools (GitHub Copilot)
  • Loading and wrangling tabular data (using tidyverse)
14:30–15:00 Coffee break
15:00–16:30
  • Basic data visualization (static plots with ggplot2)

Day 2 – 13 November

9:00–10:30
  • Statistical tests and linear modeling
  • Basic data visualization continues (ggplot2, plotly, ggiraph)

More information

This course focuses on practical skills for data management and visualization in R, specifically tailored for students and researchers in molecular biology. You will learn how to efficiently manipulate and visualize data using R’s powerful packages—tidyverse and ggplot2—and how to integrate your work into reports and web applications with RMarkdown and Shiny.

The unique aspect of this course is the application of AI tools, primarily GitHub Copilot, to assist in writing clean, reproducible code. We’ll demonstrate how to use AI to automate common tasks, generate code for data manipulation, and build visualizations. By providing clear and effective prompts, you’ll discover how to leverage AI to assist in the creation of datasets, statistical models, and visualizations—while maintaining full control over the analysis.

This course is designed to be highly practical and hands-on, allowing you to directly apply AI tools to your research. Rather than following a strict script, we will focus on interactive learning, with each session shaped by your needs and questions.

Prerequisites

No prior programming experience is required. Please bring a laptop with the latest versions of RStudio (2024.04 or later) and R base (minimum version 4.4.1) installed. Most importantly, ensure that GitHub Copilot is activated in RStudio. You can request an Educational license using your institutional email here. This process may take several days, so be sure to do it in advance.

GitHub Copilot is necessary for the workshop!

Additionally, please install the following R packages prior to the course:

  • tidyverse version 2.0.0
  • plotly version 4.10.4
  • ggplot2 version 3.5.1
  • ggiraph version 0.8.10
  • rmarkdown version 2.28
  • shiny version 1.9.1
