In the name of #CEITEC10. On Sunday, October 10, 2021, at 10:00 am, representatives of the CEITEC consortium planted an annual tree for the centre’s 10th anniversary, which we are celebrating at CEITEC throughout the year. For the location, we chose the Open Gardens education centre run by Nadace Partnerství, and for the tree, we chose the pear fruit tree, specifically the autumn variety bred in France called Pyrus communis. We chose this annual activity because our research contributes to a better environment and more sustainable agriculture. The space around the tree in the centre of the city of Brno will also serve as a place of joint meetings and a reference point for all fans of research at CEITEC, friends of science and environmental studies.

Even a single planted tree can significantly improve the environment in the future and provide quality fertilizer, healthy fruit or wood. In addition, planting a tree can help each of us fight the massive extinctions of insects and birds around the world. The trees around us have a positive effect not only on our health, but also on the health of the entire planet.

Therefore, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the CEITEC research centre, we decided to give the environment a gift in the form of a planted tree, which can be found at these coordinates: 49 ° 197´ and 16 ° 598´. At CEITEC, we are also engaged in research that contributes to the sustainability of agriculture. There are research groups of plant biologists who deal with, for example, plant traits that are related to resistance to temperatures or pests. This issue is becoming increasingly important and worthwhile in a world facing a growing world population with greater purchasing power, a changing climate and a deteriorating environment. Even the location of the tree at the apiary is not accidental. Our virologists are doing research to help defend against bee viruses, which are the main cause of bee colony collapse. Understanding how bee viruses infect cells can help prepare agents to prevent viral infections.

The Open Garden at Údolní 33, where you will find our tree, is an educational and counselling centre with examples of city management. The garden saves water and energy, and it recycles, thus reducing the impact on the environment.
