About event
The field of neural engineering
Neural engineering is a discipline at the interface of several fields, concerned with the development of methods and technologies for understanding, diagnosing, treating and interacting with the nervous system. Neural engineers design and build devices that monitor and influence neural activity, from simple sensors and stimulators of neural activity to complex interfaces between the brain and the computer. This field combines engineering principles with neuroscience to design solutions that improve patients' quality of life and expand our understanding of fundamental neurological processes.
What to expect
Our Summer School will not be a boring series of lectures but a series of hands-on workshops where you will get the opportunity to explore all aspects of neural engineering. You will learn how to sense electrical signals in yourself and in animal models. You will experience how electrical stimulation of nerves works. You'll put it all together to build a simple neural interface to control a robotic limb. You will also visit the CEITEC Nano cleanrooms to make an implantable neural stimulator using advanced microfabrication technologies, which you will then test in cell cultures and animal models. You will then use all the knowledge you have gained in a group project to solve a real-world problem.
Who can participate
Neural engineering is a strongly interdisciplinary field, requiring collaboration between experts from engineering and science disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials science, electronics, robotics, mechanical engineering, IT, biology, neuroscience, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and medicine. This summer school is for all enthusiastic undergraduate and graduate students in these and related fields who want to broaden their horizons, try working with technologies they have only known from sci-fi movies, and improve their CVs.
More information
Pre-registration is open until 30 June 2025.
All interested applicants should register by sending an email to pr@ceitec.vutbr.cz. The registration email must include:
- CV
- a cover letter explaining why they chose our Summer School and why it would be beneficial to them.
On the basis of these submissions, the mentors themselves (the scientists in charge of the Summer School) will select the applicants, who will be sent a binding application form.
