The scientific community of the South Moravian Region once again has reason to celebrate, as molecular biologist Karel Říha from CEITEC Masaryk University received the prestigious Award for Contribution to Science from the hands of the Governor of the South Moravian Region Jan Grolich on 14 May.
Karel Říha's research focuses on molecular mechanisms that regulate plant growth and development, which has far-reaching consequences for agriculture and the environment. The team under his leadership has succeeded in uncovering key processes that can lead to the development of more resilient and productive crops, which is essential for ensuring food security in a changing climate and fluctuating temperatures.
Karel Říha's scientific career has been full of success and recognition. His publications are frequently cited and his research is funded by prestigious grant agencies. Thanks to a method he developed, molecular biologists can now follow the development of plant germ cells in real time using a fluorescence microscope.
In addition to his scientific work, Říha is also involved in teaching, where he inspires and educates new generations of scientists. He is also setting a good example for young researchers by his efforts to influence legislative processes – for example, by trying to incorporate genome editing methods into practice to improve the resistance of crops to pests and weather or to increase their yield.
The South Moravian Region's Award for Contribution to Science is a testament to his significant contribution to the scientific community and society as a whole, and his work is an example of how science can contribute to solving global challenges and improving the quality of life.
