Thanks to their research, CEITEC scientists are helping to fight one of the biggest threats of the 21st century – cancer. On the occasion of World Cancer Day on February 4, 2021, let us remind you their greatest achievements in the last few years.
We deal with, for example, colon cancer and skin cancer. Doctor Marek Mraz received a prestigious ERC grant intensive research on the origins and cure of chronic lymphocyte leukaemia, the most frequent type of leukaemia. We regularly join the worldwide Movember initiative, which highlights the prevention of prostate and testicular cancer. And we do a lot more to fight cancer. Read below.

- Cancer is not just one disease. It is a set of diseases that are characterized by being out of control and causing abnormal growth of cells that do not die.
- There are approximately 200 different types of cancer. The most common are breast, lung and prostate cancers.
- Genetics contributes to cancer in only 5-10% of cases. 90% of cancer is caused by ecological and environmental factors.
- Globally, cancer is responsible for more deaths than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.
- Not only people and animals suffer from cancer, but plants can also get it.
- According to the WHO, the number of cancer cases will increase to 70% in the coming years, but at the same time the number of cured cases will increase.
